Chudaramma satulala – Lyrics meaning:

Pallavi: O dear ladies, Godadevi, who first wears the garland and then offers the same garland to Lord Venkateshwara, is on the marriage pedestal with her husband, Lord Venkateshwara Swamy, so look at that great celebration and sing about the glory of their marriage.

Story:

According to literary and religious tradition, Periyalvar, originally called Vishnuchitan, was an ardent devotee of Perumaal (Vishnu) and used to string garlands to the deity daily. He was childless and he prayed to God to save him from the longing for a child.

One day, he found a girl under a Tulasi plant in a garden inside the temple. The child was considered to be the Goddess Bhudevi herself. He named the child as Kothai, who grew up as a devotee of Krishna, an avatar of Vishnu.

She is believed to have worn the garland before dedicating it to the temple’s presiding deity. Periyalvar, who later found it, was highly upset and remonstrated her.

Vishnu appeared in his dream and asked him to dedicate only the garland worn by Andal to him because when the new garland was put on Vishnu’s idol, it fell but when Andal wore it, Vishnu turned into gold. The girl Kothai was thus named Andal and was referred to as “Chudikodutha Sudarkodi”, meaning the lady who wore and gave her garland to Vishnu.

Periyalvar took Andal to the Ranganatha Swamy Temple in Srirangam and Andal was reunited with Vishnu as his bride.

CharaNam 1: O dear ladies, this gentle-bodied Godadevi who first wears and then offers the same garland to Lord Venkateshwara,

She is goddess Lakshmi Devi so what scarcity of ornaments and adornments does she have? Mother of Manmatha (God of love), so What scarcity of beauty does she have? She is the sister of the moon, what scarcity of brightness does she have?

Story-1:

The stories about the relationship between Manmatha (Cupid) and Shiva are told in Matsya PuraaNa and Shiva PuraaNa. Tarakaasura continued to hurt Indra and other gods. 

No one but Shiva’s son can kill him because of the boons given by Brahma. By then Lord Shiva was doing penance as a celibate. Brahma advises Parvati that if she breaks Shiva’s celibacy and marries, their son will kill Tarakaasura.

Indra sends Manmatha to do this feat. Manmatha awakens Shiva with a flower arrow with the help of Vasantha. Enraged, Lord Shiva opens his third eye and burns Manmatha into ashes. 

Matsya PuraaNa and Bhagavata PuraaNa mention the relationship between Krishna and Cupid. After being burned by Shiva, Cupid was reborn as Pradyumna in the womb of Krishna’s wife Rukmini.

Story-2:

Unable to bear the pain of the demons, the deities took Lord Shiva and Brahma with them and went to Shri Mahavishnu and told him about their sufferings.

Then Lord Vishnu hears their cry and says “Now be friendly with the demons because they are strong. Be friendly with them and churn the ocean of milk.

Use Mount Mandara as the churning rod and Vasuki, a naga who resided on Shiva’s neck, as the churning rope. Amṛit, the heavenly nectar of immortality will born. You drink that Amrit and leave the sufferings to the demons, says Vishnu.

During churning, the moon and Mahalakshmi are born along with Halahalam (Poision), Amrit (nectar), Kamadhenu, Uchchaisrava, Airavata, Kalpavriksha, Apsaras, etc, that’s why Annamacharya speaks of them (the moon and Mahalakshmi) as siblings in this stanza and mentions Mahalakshmi as the daughter of the ocean of milk in the second stanza and Amrita’s relative in the third stanza.

CharaNam 2: O dear ladies, there is none equal to her excellence who first wears and then offers the same garland to Lord Venkateshwara.

This Godadevi, who surpasses excellence, is the daughter of the Milky Ocean, so what is she short of majestic? She is the mother of the whole world, so no scarcity of pity. She dwells on the lotus flower, what is less for her gentle nature?

CharaNam 3: O dear ladies, this young beautiful Godadevi who first wears and then offers the same garland to Lord Venkateshwara,

Worshipped by the gods, then what is less of her greatness?  Amrit’s (nectar’s) relative, what is less of her happiness? Sri Venkateshwara Swamy himself liked, came and married Sri Mahalakshmi who has many virtues.
