Samba Shivayanave – Swarajati

Samba Shivayanave is a famous swarajati composed by Chinna Krishnadasar in khamas raga. It was written in Sanskrit and is the simplest type of Carnatic piece. In this swarajati the poet is asking us to pray to Lord Shiva, who resides in Himalayas.

This swarajati is in Aadi TaLam. It consists of one Laghu and two Dhrutas.

Pallavi:

[Pray to Lord Shiva, who resides in the silver mountains of the snow-clad Himalayas].

Anupallavi:

[You are the heart-stealer of goddess Parvati and the Supreme Being, we approached you, please have mercy on us]

CharaNam 1:

[You are my guru and God. I meditate on you at all times in my heart].

CharaNam 2:

[I never forget from my heart that you are the treasure of compassion. oh! mahadeva, mahaprabho, you are handsome and you grant boons to the devatas and the destroyer of worldly fears].

CharaNam 3:

[I always prayed to Shiva the giver of boons faithfully at madhurapuram].

CharaNam 4:

[You are the one who is benevolent; having the moon on your crown. You conquered and destroyed the three demons Taraksa, Kamalaksa, and Vidyunmali, sons of demon Tarakaasura. Gives shelter to the people who seek your protection. Have wonderful qualities in you, ruled Kruta Yuga, and you help people who are in need, hey Eswar! You have lotus-like feet and we are happy to reach your feet. I will not abandon my religious practices like Knowledge, meditation, bathing, drinking holy water, helping the needy, respect, self-respect, etc. At last, I have found you and by chanting your stotras, I am reaching your feet, please have mercy on me, accept me and take me into your refuge].

Khandagati:

[Myna is singing your name again and again like a mantra and I am wishing to reach your lotus-like feet and chant your mantra, hey chokkanaadha! I am a devotee to Lord Krishna and I have faith in you, so please take me into your asylum].
